Weekly Blog #9

1.       Not listed, but it is for the show Rock Center
2.       Apple moves forward stronger and more sufficient
3.       I thought it was interesting how it would shows pictures of Steve Jobs and the Apple stores etc. It incorporates what happened before moving into wants going to happen. The pictures and spoken information being told helps us to understand Apple and the death of Steve Jobs. Then it shows clips of Tim Cook speaking about Jobs and how great he was to his company and how he will try to fulfill his shoes and take those steps to making Apple stronger. They show Close ups of Tim and his response to Jobs death, although he was happy to be the new founder he was also very sad to see his friend gone. They talk about how the company is not a “made in America” company.
4.       1. Steve Jobs
       2. Tim Cook
       3. SNL skit on China and its impact on Apple
       4. Biggest Large Glass Apple Store
       5. When Steve Jobs died
       6.  Counter fitters
       7. New TV being introduced
  5.  I think this story took a lot of following… The person who filmed the story had to follow Tim Cook around lots of places such as the glass home store Apple, a sitting area (a few times etc.). They also had a video of him speaking at a public event about Jobs and how he was taking over. They filmed him at a Apple convention as well for him to promote the new TV. It probably took a lot of time to film and produce because they also did multiple sit down questions with Tim Cook. Whoever produced this also had to know background information on Jobs and his death etc. I liked that the story had the SNL skit on Apple included in it, then it explained why and how Apple is not a “Made in America” company.  The reporter had to ask multiple deep questions which took time and effort to introduce, the reporter also had to make the speaker (Tim) feel comfortable. Once he did so then Tim could open up about the company, his ideas and more information on the owner himself Steve Jobs.  This is close to what we are doing because we have to get people to answer questions and by doing so you have to talk to them first and get them comfortable to open up and say what and how they think/ feel about the topic.

Analysis of A news source week 9 #2

Basics: Kare11 news at 6 pm. 1/14/13 anchor Julie Nelson
1st Story: Gas Tax Increase (economy) by Julie Nelson
2nd Story: Finding funding for roads (public issue) by Scott Seroka
3rd Story: Taxing Clothing (economy) by John Croman
The story that I took the most interest in was the 3rd story. If Minnesota gets sales tax on clothing it will really affect our economy and future. This story is recent and occurring right now, court cases etc. are being discussed about this issue/ cause. This story is super important because it will affect everybody, when people by clothes they will be paying extra than the cost in “tax”. It’s an interesting story because Minnesota has never had sales tax on clothes before and we already have it on food!

Analysis of A news source

Basics: 5 pm. news on channel 4 (WCCO), 1/14/13 anchors Amelia Santaniello and Frank Vascellaro

1st Story: New Drug Trial (health) with Amelia Santaniello
2nd Story: Berries For Heart Health (health/diet) with Frank Vascellaro
3rd Story: Japan Snow (foreign weather) with Amelia Santaniello
Weather: Chris Shaffer

I thought the story about Berries was interesting because it proved that strawberries, blueberries, cranberries etc. are healthy because the components inside are anti-oxidizing agents which help eliminate negative elements within our body. In other words it helps to kill off bad germs in our body. The timing of this story is great for anytime of the year so its relatable. This is important to our whole nation because we can use this to protect ourselves from diseases and sickness, also extend our life span. This story is close too us, everybody has a near by grocery store etc. to receive these berries and or to understand what and where you can find them. This is unique and helps us all to see the easy things we can do to be healthier.

Week 8: Weekly Response

1.       I find it very interesting that Dotson says writing in three’s makes everything more memorable. As in; Red, White and Blue. You want to make everything rhythmic, and build every story into a surprise. When you incorporate soundbites into the piece make sure their emotional and leave an impression. When the writer is putting all this together they have to make sure it flows smoothly. The picture has to come first, and then you reflect on the moment that gave you a lump in your throat. Next what were the main points of the story that did not include pictures and lastly what was the best closing shot. Dotson’s main key in all of this is to inform us that the more pictures and flowing clips/ soundbites the better the outcome.
2.       The name of the story is “ALS patient uses his eyes to DJ New Year’s Eve” it first aired January 2, 2013.
3.       The club music (like techno-ish), The man sipping out of the water bottle (slurping sounds), The alarm thing on his bed(like a ticking noise), Man checking on the microphone (check 1, check 2)
4.       Close up of DJ system, extra close up of his face, fade of him and deejay equipment, Medium shot of him laying down on bed and his wife talking sitting on the bed, full panorama of the club area.
5.       The party never stops.
6.       There are a lot of natural sounds in the story which help us understand how the man is feeling and what his life is like. When he sipped water out of the bottle and his bed alarm thing went off we interpret that this man’s life is super difficult/ painful. There was a good picture of the man before being diagnosed with ALS, he was happy and DJing at the time. The soundbites are perfect length and help give us information about the man’s condition. Once in a while they would do an extra close up of the man’s face and make it emotional and quite. There is also this cool shot where the man’s face is on the screen and it fades in with the DJing equipment.

Analysis of a news source week #8

Basics: kare11 news, 1-7-13 at 10pm, Anchors Julie Nelson and Randy Shaver
1st Story: Foreclosure agreement anchored by Rena Sarigianopoulos
2nd Story: MN House Resignations reported by Julie Nelson
3rd Story: Aurora Theatre Shooting Hearing by Randy Shaver
The story that impacted me the most was the Aurora Shooting story because it was so terrible and unusual.  This story isn’t that current but it’s current that there is a hearing being held to find out exactly what will happen to the killer. It’s an important topic because it has affected many people. The odds of something so tragic and evil happening are so rare and that’s what makes this important.  It happened in the US but not very close to Minnesota. A similar situation could occur to any state though. It’s an interesting story because it’s so sad and it makes you want to know what’s happening to this man who killed all these innocent people. It’s so sick and different how some man could just hurt all these people for pure sick pleasure.
